Callahan Out for Season

Four words no New York Rangers fan wants to hear: Callahan out for season.  Yes, it’s true.  ESPN is reporting that Ryan Callahan broke his leg blocking a shot during the Ranger’s important comeback last night at Madison Square Garden.  Losing Callahan hurts the Rangers in so many ways.  Callahan, along with Brandon Dubinsky and Marc Staal, make up the young nucleus of a future contender.  I call them future contender because a team that struggles to score will do so even more in the playoffs without Callahan.  Callahan has played in 60 games this year and scored 23 goals, while tallying 25 assists.  Not only is he a cog in the offense, but he is 5th among forwards in blocks this year with 77.  This is the second time this year Callahan will miss extended time due to blocking a shot.  Defensive toughness comes with a price.  This young Rangers team shows a lot of promise, but it’s going to be tough this year.  The Rangers do still have one of the top goal scorers in the league though in Marian Gaborik.  Gaborik has been slowed by injury this year as well, putting up only 47 points after having 86 last year.  For the Rangers to have a shot in the playoffs they need Gaborik to return to elite form.  Sean Avery is going to have to play a bigger role facilitating the offense as well.  Mats Zuccarello should get called up from the Ranger’s AHL affiliate the Connecticut Whale.  Who knows, maybe Drury will come back from injury and be his old self and everything will be all good in Ranger-land.

this is it for the Rags. Top goal scorer – out for the first two rounds of the playoffs at least. I just can’t see the Rags surviving two teams, incl. Washington, Philly, and Boston, without him.
