Philadelphia Phillies (11-6) Roy Oswalt (2-0, 2.50 ERA)
San Diego Padres (8-10) Mat Latos (0-2, 5.84 ERA)
Quick preview tonight since I’ve got a lot of beers to drink tonight with some college buddies. First off, huge, huge, huge win yesterday versus the Brewers. It wasn’t pretty, but Polly and Shane-o both hit clutch home runs to come back and nip the Brew Crew. Also huge? The Big Truck. He pumped a fastball past Ryan Braun to end the game. Braun has been on fire lately and I was scared as hell when he was walking up to the plate, but Big Truck buckled down to get his 4th save. The bullpen continues its success as Ryan Madson and Kyle Kendrick combined to shut down the Brewers offense in the 7th & 8th innings before turning it over to Contreras. Wow. I can’t believe I just wrote Kyle Kendrick and shut down in the same sentence. Anyway the Phils are off to the land of 10pm games and hoping to build on yesterday’s big victory.
Keys To The Game
- Roy’s back (The body part). Oswalt had to leave his last start due to back spasm and it was questionable whether he would make his next start. Thankfully little Roy will be out there tonight and takes his career 10-2 record versus the Padres with him. He’s also 4-1 with a 1.79 ERA in Petco Park. It’ll be interesting to see how Roy deals with his back pain, something he has had in the past.
- Jump on Latos. Mat Latos is one of my boys. I’ve had him in my one crazy fantasy baseball league for a couple of years now and last year he finally came into his own. This year? Not so much. Due to injury he’s only made two starts this season, losing both of them. He’s lost his last seven straight starts and has an ERA of over 7 in those games. He did have one start last season versus the Phils throwing one run ball over seven innings. Hopefully the Phillies can add to his struggles.
- Play some small ball. Petco Park is ginormous. All of these games will most likely be low scoring so solid defense and timely hitting is crucial. Also look for the Phillies to try to steal a lot of bases during this series. That does require the Phillies to get on base, so hopefully this trip to the West can get them back on track.
