Phillies Preview – April 29th 2011

April 29th 2011, 7:05pm
New York Mets (11-14) Mike Pelfrey (1-2, 7.23 ERA)
Philadelphia Phillies (16-8) Vance Worley (Season Debut)

The New York Mets are on fire. They’ve won 5 of their last six games and are flying up the NL East standings. Oh wait never mind their record is only 11-14 and they are still half a game out of 4th place. The Phillies on the other hand have been playing terribly, have all sorts of injuries and somehow are still half a game ahead of the Marlins for first in the NL East.

Joe Blanton is latest to fall victim to injury. If we had to pick one of the five Philly starters to get hurt I’m pretty sure 10000000% of Phillies fans would choose Blanton. In his place the Phillies send to the hill my boy Vance Worley. Vance was up for a cup of coffee last year going 0-1 with a 1.80 ERA in two starts. He’s not overpowering and is kinda weird looking IMO, but he’s a competitor and pitched well last season for the Phils. He is opposed by Mike Pelfrey the Mets “ace”.  This so called ace is 0-1 with a 15.00 ERA in his last three starts at Citizens Bank Park and in his last six road starts has a 8.67 ERA. He pitched well in his start lowering his ERA from 9 something to 7.23, man he is one helluva ace.

Keys To The Game

  • Build on last game. The offense actually hit the ball.  I was a bit in shock throughout the game, but goddamn it felt good. Tonight they get to face Mike Pelfrey who really must not like pitching against the Phillies. Everyone in the lineup hits well against him sans Placido Polanco, but he has been on fire lately. Ryan Howard is hitting .406 with two homers in 32 at-bats against Pelfrey. Expect him to be excited that he’s home and have a big game.
  • Vance Worley. Blanton, J.C., Lidge, Dominic, Big Truck all are currently on the DL. Throw in Chooch who’s banged up to make it a 6 pack of Phillies who are currently injured. Worley was solid, but not spectacular for the Phillies last season. Against a weak, yet hot hitting Mets lineup it will be a good test to see where the young gun is at in his career.
  • Bullpen. More than likely Vance won’t pitch into the 7th inning.  That means we’ll probably get to see some sort of Kendrick/Baez inning aka I’ll be doing shots of Jameson around the 6th/7th innings.

    Just curious,
by shots of Jamesons does that mean you have a drinking game for when the relievers get in there? or is that just to steady the nerves? I know what you mean. I would definitely join you in the drinking game if you have one. lets see, walk first batter, shot, hit batter, shot, some how get out of inning without letting a run score, shot and chug a beer. lol I like your analysis and agree with you.

Well it’s usually to calm the nerves. I actually have a little confidence in the Stutes/Baez connection….David Herndon.. well not so much. May have had a 10 run lead, but I still almost had to break out the Jameson after that 2nd home run.

the expresion on David’s face after those homers was priceless. like he knew he was a sack of shit. two minors (worley and stutes) came in and did great. he blew 5th shut out of the season. his control is worthless right now. I hope they have the good sense to send him down and keep stutes up.
